Roee Baldinger // Cerno Argus
Cerno Argus: (From the Latin) 'Cerno' - to discern / to separate in the dark,
'Argus' - the hundred-eyed giant.
Finding form within the void
For years, my world was defined by the mechanics of live production:
manipulating sound, controlling light, and managing the heavy energy of the stage.
Following the events of October 7th and after more than 150 days of military service,
the silence that followed pushed me beyond the manipulation of sound.
The weight of that silence demanded a response, a raw necessity to find structure and meaning within the darkness.
What began as a solitary response to the void solidified into a mission, taking final shape after 700 days of service.
My work is not a study, nor is it an exploration process; it is a visceral coping mechanism.
Born from isolation, it translates the psychological weight of Pareidolia (the instinct to find faces in the inanimate) - into a visual language of survival.
Through the Alone In Darkness (A.I.D.) series, this frantic instinct to find connection becomes visible.
Within these frames, matter ceases to be an object and instead becomes the companion we seek when the world goes quiet.
Finding these figures and bringing them into the light ensures that even in the silence, we are never truly alone.
The Minor Key of Matter
My creative process is often auditory before it is visual.
I operate strictly within a minor-key aesthetic; where every frame is built on tension, high contrast, and dense shadows.
This style is rooted in my musical background, but my technical approach works like sound engineering. Light and shadow are frequencies to be tuned.
Each frame is built in layers, much like mixing a heavy track: reshaping the textures and driving the contrast until it reaches a visual distortion - a photographic equivalent of a
Metal Zone MT-2 pedal.
I crush the blacks until the background noise disappears, leaving only the raw essence of the subject.
This method documents how my mind navigates isolation.
It is a deliberate drift - finding structured patterns and silent entities,
where others see only a void.
